Chris joined Karmelle in August 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. An experienced Mechanical Engineer, he helps to assemble, test and install our liquid packaging equipment.
Chris’ role involves everything from problem finding to electrical control – skills he has honed over the course of long and varied career.
A year since he became a member of the Karmelle team, we caught up with Chris to learn more about his life in engineering…
Chris, you’re an experienced Mechanical Engineer. How did you begin your career?
I was apprentice-trained as a Machine Tool Fitter, working with spindle screw machines. In my early twenties, I started my own company building engines. I was a very brave person! I made a name for myself in the world of race engines.
And what brought you to Karmelle?
Later, I moved to Huddersfield and gained experience in the hydraulics industry as a Machinist, before being promoted to Goods Inwards Inspector. I then began working in the pump industry. In 2021, I was ready for a change, and accepted the role of Mechanical Engineer at Karmelle! I jumped at the chance to be a fitter, building a range of filling, capping and labelling machines.
It sounds as though you have a real passion for engineering. Has that always been the case?
I’ve always been interested in engineering, right from getting my first set of technical Lego. And I always wanted to be a fitter. In fact, I made my first motorcycle at just 13, and restored another bike at 15.
Does engineering run in the family?
I’m hoping that my daughter might follow in my footsteps, but I’m not sure if she agrees!
What’s your favourite aspect of the role?
Simply put, I like making things. It’s very rewarding to see a project come together.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently assembling a 6 head inline filling machine, which is part of an end-to-end filling, capping and labelling line for cleaning products.
I’ve also just got a new set of Lego – a Land Rover!
And what advice would you give to engineers at the beginning of their engineering career?
Quality is important. I’m very meticulous, because I believe in doing a job properly. I’d rather do it once, and well, than have to rebuild something several times.
